The LWCC Foundation Addresses Louisiana Health Vulnerabilities

WRITTEN BY

BATON ROUGE (September 29, 2021) –Too many Louisiana citizens struggle with long-term, ongoing health issues that reduce their quality of life and ability to work. We have seen this struggle play out firsthand throughout the COVID-19 pandemic as the health of many of our fellow Louisiana citizens has been and continues to be fully exposed. The LWCC Foundation’s Louisiana Well-Again: COVID-19 Response Package was established to improve this.

Phase 3 of this package, recently awarded to 10 Louisiana organizations, supports nonprofits who are tackling our state’s health vulnerabilities head on. According to the Louisiana Department of Health, major health concerns include, but are not limited to:

  • obesity
  • hypertension/high blood pressure
  • diabetes
  • cardiac disease
  • chronic kidney disease
  • congestive heart failure

The grants provide support to organizations whose programs combat long-existing physical wellness vulnerabilities. It’s one way of showing our firm commitment to a healthier and safer Louisiana.

“The funding for this cycle of giving is critically important to addressing the health challenges our state faces, both today and in the future. We’re thrilled to put our support behind the innovative efforts of the nonprofit organizations and hospitals who received a grant from the LWCC Foundation,” said John Hawie, LWCC Foundation Board President.

WHO IS LEADING CHANGE?

There are organizations already leading on much needed and impactful change. The LWCC Foundation provided several of these nonprofits grants through Phase 3 of Louisiana Well Again to support their efforts.

When selecting grant recipients, the committee prioritized organizations who were tackling long-existing problems with new and innovative approaches. The organizations receiving Phase 3 Louisiana Well Again: COVID-19 Response Package grants are as follows:

  • Baton Rouge General Hospital, Baton Rouge, CARE Initiative focused on preventative care in underserved communities
  • BREADA, Baton Rouge, Outreach strategies to connect people with healthy foods
  • CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital, Alexandria, Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Diabetes response program
  • Girls on the Run New Orleans, New Orleans, Physical activity based Positive Youth Development Program
  • LSU Health Sciences Shreveport, Shreveport, Training for community health workers for the Eat Right and Move Program
  • MLK Health Center Shreveport, Shreveport, Healthy Families, Healthy Communities Program
  • Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, Baton Rouge, Launch Capital Area Hypertension Outreach program with local barbershops to proactively screen and manage disease in a targeted patient population
  • St. Tammany Health System, Covington, Telehealth disease prevention and halting program
  • Union General Hospital, Farmerville, Expand rural health clinic capacity to include chronic care management to current telehealth program
  • Woman’s Hospital, Baton Rouge, Patient Support Fund to support access to preventative and maintenance care and educational programs

WHAT IS LOUISIANA WELL AGAIN?

The announcement of the Phase 3 grantees brings a close to Louisiana Well Again: COVID-19 Response Package, a $1.1 million grants and gift package. Begun in the spring of 2020, Louisiana Well Again was the LWCC Foundation’s response to the pandemic, providing support to Louisiana-based nonprofit organizations and hospitals as they address critical wellness issues that make our state’s population more susceptible to illnesses, such as the COVID-19.

“COVID-19 has highlighted long-existing vulnerabilities and conditions in Louisiana citizens that threaten the health and safety of our population,” says Baton Rouge Coroner Dr. William “Beau” Clark. “We need visionary leaders like LWCC who are committed to addressing these root issues and cultivating a healthier and safer culture in our state for decades to come.”

In Phase 1, the LWCC Foundation distributed a $100,000 gift to Feeding Louisiana to provide more than 400,000 meals to food banks statewide. In June 2020, Phase 2 distributed $500,000 in grant funding to support frontline healthcare workers in hospitals across the state.
