Whether you’re a seasoned driver, just starting out, or somewhere in between, nearly everyone is guilty of some form of distracted driving. Distracted drivers are everywhere you look: the cellphone socialite, the driver DJ, the on-the-go cosmetologist, and even the in-car diner. While you may think that quickly checking your phone or searching for your favorite song won’t be an issue, the reality is that these seemingly simple tasks significantly increase the risk of a motor vehicle accident.
Distracted driving is defined as any activity that diverts attention from the act of driving, also being cited as the number one cause of work-related fatalities as of 2019, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Any non-driving activity you engage in while behind the wheel is considered a potential distraction and increases your risk of danger. Driving safely requires your absolute, full attention.
When thinking of distracted driving, we immediately think of talking or texting on a cell phone. Although that is a major source of distraction across drivers, there are other ways a driver’s attention can be diverted.
The three main types of distractions are:
- Visual: taking your eyes off the road
- Manual: taking your hands off the wheel
- Cognitive: taking your mind off of driving

Remember: Distracted driving is preventable. Here are a few tips on reducing distractions:
- Place your phone out of arm’s reach while driving
- If a call or text must be answered, safely pull over to do so
- Adjust driving time to allow for stops to eat, review directions, etc.
- Review the route and become familiar with the directions before getting on the road
- Wait until you have reached your destination before looking for dropped items
- If you’re drowsy, safely pull over to the side of the road
Simple actions that take only a few seconds may seem like they wouldn’t be that distracting. However, reading or sending a text takes your eyes off the road for roughly 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that’s the equivalent to driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed.
Driving a vehicle is a privilege and carries a lot of personal responsibility. Many people are needlessly injured or killed in vehicle accidents due to inattentive drivers. Don’t let yourself be the cause of an accident by being distracted. Remember, your number one priority while driving is operating the vehicle safely.
