Elevating Louisiana Through Service
Louisiana Loyal is a movement launched by LWCC to celebrate and elevate Louisiana. This movement starts with us and drives both our core business and innovative new initiatives. In 2021, LWCC team members had multiple opportunities to elevate our community through projects that continue to help Louisiana thrive.
Louisiana Loyal Service Project
This initiative of LWCC’s Corporate Citizenship Committee allowed LWCC employees to come together to utilize the company’s Volunteer Time Off (VTO) incentive. In 2021, employees once again engaged with Front Yard Bikes, a community bike shop that focuses on teaching participants of all ages how to fix and maintain bikes, while teaching them life skills to aid them in the future. Following the inaugural service project in December of 2020, the committee worked to facilitate additional contributions while accommodating COVID restrictions and precautions. LWCC donated 100 bike helmets, 60 bike lights, and gift bags to participating students during their Annual Awards Ceremony and Christmas party. At the event employees helped students make ornaments, served them dinner, assisted with cookie decorating, and played games. Wet weather delayed the group’s bike ride to LWCC’s offices, which will be rescheduled for early 2022.
Kids’ Chance Scholarship Fund
The Kids’ Chance Scholarship Fund is administered by the Louisiana Bar Foundation (LBF) and provides scholarships to dependent children of Louisiana workers killed or permanently and totally disabled in a workplace accident. Since 2004, the program has awarded 322 scholarships totaling $784,000.
In years past, LWCC has supported the Kids’ Chance through a golf tournament, but opted for a new format in 2021, utilizing the Governor M.J. “Mike” Foster, Jr. Learning Center to launch the inaugural Speaker Series. Billy Beane, subject of the bestselling book and Oscar nominated film, Moneyball, and Major League Baseball (MLB) executive, was the first featured speaker of the series. During the event, Beane provided insight into his strategic business methodology and leadership tactics which have been the backbone to his success as a baseball executive. LWCC, along with the help of our agent partners and business sponsors, collectively donated $43,000 to the Louisiana Bar Foundation Kids’ Chance Scholarship Program.
Angel Tree Project
For over ten years, LWCC’s Claims Team has spread holiday cheer to families through the Angel Tree program, benefitting the children and surviving spouses of injured workers that were killed while working for LWCC policyholders. A Christmas tree is decorated with ornaments that represent the number of injured workers, spouses, widows, and children that need gifts this holiday season. All employees are invited to remove an individual’s ornament from the tree and purchase gifts for them. In 2021, 74 presents were distributed to 36 individuals.
Holiday Giving Contest
In 2021, LWCC launched an innovative new initiative to support nonprofits working to elevate Louisiana alongside our agent partners. In lieu of a traditional holiday gift from LWCC, agent partners were invited to nominate a Louisiana-based nonprofit to receive a financial contribution from us to support their work.
Over 30 nonprofits were nominated from across the state. LWCC’s Agency Council narrowed the nominees to three finalists who moved on to a public vote to determine their share of the $20,000 gift. The three finalists were Kids Join the Fight, Affiliated Blind of Louisiana, and the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. Learn more about this contest and the results here.
Breast Cancer Awareness
LWCC commemorated Breast Cancer Awareness month in October 2021 by supporting the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s Geaux Pink Campaign. Geaux Pink is a signature fundraising program that encourages individuals, schools, restaurants, businesses, sports teams, and more to join in the fight against breast cancer during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. LWCC’s Diversity and Inclusion ERG launched an event to support this campaign which allowed employees to purchase “jeans days,” and the funds raised were donated. LWCC employees raised $2,100 to aid breast cancer patients, provide free breast cancer screenings, and develop education programs and early detection initiatives.
Despite the year’s challenges, we are proud to elevate Louisiana and make an impact. Through our actions, we bring to life our purpose of helping Louisiana thrive. We are grateful for the progress made and look forward to a new year and new opportunities.
