LWCC Spotlights Policyholders St. Tammany Fire Protection Districts #1 & #4 as Exemplary Safety Leaders

BATON ROUGE, La (October X, 2024) – LWCC, Louisiana’s largest workers’ compensation insurance carrier, spotlights St. Tammany Fire Protection District #1, in Slidell, and St. Tammany Fire Protection District #4, in Mandeville, in its latest Louisiana Loyal Story Series for outstanding commitment to community and worker safety. These LWCC policyholders are leading the state in safety by deploying innovative training and dynamic tools that protect lives, prioritize firefighters’ health, and elevate safety standards in Louisiana.

‍Shared Training Assets

As two of the 13 fire districts across St. Tammany Parish, Districts #1 and #4 serve a growing population of over 92,000 residents and respond to nearly 17,500 calls a year. Less than half of all calls are fire-related, emphasizing the need for diverse safety training.

“We're very proud of our training facility – it’s state of the art,” said Chief Chris Kaufmann with St. Tammany Fire Protection District #1. “We can change it up, so our firefighters never get the same scenarios twice. Now, firefighters know what to look for when they arrive on scene, and that could potentially save an entire crew's life.”

Innovative Safety Tools

St. Tammany Fire Protection Districts #1 and #4 prioritize firefighters mental and physical health and incorporate innovative safety tools crews can use after every emergency, including:

• Decontamination showers on fire trucks to enable immediate cleansing and lower exposure time and transfer risk

• Specialized washers and driers to thoroughly clean gear at stations, eliminating the need to wash gear at home and possibly expose firefighter families to carcinogens and contaminants

• Mental health counseling, physical fitness requirements and comprehensive health screening  

• District 1 has introduced a specialized sweat room and exercise bikes to detox after a fire

Exceptional Safety Standards

Both districts maintain exceptional standards as the only two fire districts in the state of Louisiana to achieve international accreditation from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI). Additionally, District #4 received a Class 1 and District #1 received a Class 2 rating from the Property Insurance Association of Louisiana (PIAL), an organization that evaluates the fire protection capabilities of municipalities and fire districts to determine protection classifications on a scale of 1 to 10.
