New Year’s Resolutions: Building on Safety Success in 2025

WRITTEN BY

American companies’ commitment to safe operations and safety planning is paying off. According to the most recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, private industry reported 8.4 percent fewer nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in 2023 than in 2022, including a 56.6 percent decrease in illness, the lowest since 2019.

In Louisiana, workplace injury and illness are also declining, with the state now reporting the second lowest incident rate of nonfatal workplace injury or illness among 41 ranked states, according to the Louisiana Workforce Commission. The incidence rate of work-related injuries and illnesses among Louisiana’s private-sector employers also hit a new low in 2023, at 1.4 incidents per 100 full-time workers. The national private sector incidence rate was 2.4 that year.

The latest safety stats are a credit to dedicated workers who take safety seriously and the thousands of companies that make safety planning a top priority.

To build on these safety successes in 2025, and keep even more Louisiana workers safe, companies should revisit their safety plans and get teams involved to renew their commitment to safety.

A successful safety and risk management program requires detailed planning, careful implementation, and commitment to a strong safety culture. To get started, follow LWCC’s five steps to safety:

INSPECT

Walk through your worksite and facilities looking for any potential hazards, including everything from tripping risks to inadequate lighting. Inspect your workplace regularly to identify actual and potential hazards as they emerge.

ANALYZE

When accidents happen in the workplace, analyze how and why they occurred and what adjustments could prevent the accident from happening again.

EVALUATE

Keeping the worksite inspection and accident analysis in mind, it’s important to assess the effectiveness of existing safety measures and protocols. LWCC’s self-evaluation safety survey can help. Visit LWCC.com/resources for a quick, 25-question survey to guide your evaluation.

PLAN

By clearly defining your policies in a safety plan, you’ll establish a culture of responsibility and accountability, better manage your risks, and have materials readily available if an incident occurs. If you’re unsure where or how to start, visit LWCC.com/resources, where you can find guides and templates to develop a written plan.

TRAIN

Your safety plan should include training guidelines to set a standard for workplace safety and best practices. Educating employees helps them understand why safe practices are necessary and how they can minimize accidents. Be sure to make safety training part of your onboarding process for new employees.
