‘Tis the season! In the coming days, children will be running around a Christmas tree filled with presents as they anxiously wait to unwrap the perfect gift. Families will spend hours in the kitchen cooking that oh-so-special traditional meal. While this year may look different, the holiday season is still a wonderful time filled with joy and family. However you celebrate this time of the year, remember there are many things you can do to ensure a safe and happy holiday.
From the food to the decorations, make sure you understand and practice safe habits. These safety tips seem like common sense, but when caught up in the hustle bustle of the season, they can be easy to forget.
- Travel well-rested, plan ahead, designate a sober driver, and limit distractions while driving when visiting family, taking that long-needed vacation, or enjoying a holiday party.
- Decorate using the appropriate lights indoors/outdoors, place trees (artificial and live) 3 feet away from a heat source, keep potentially poisonous plants away from children, and avoid placing breakable ornaments with small attachments on lower branches of trees where small children can reach them.
- Watch out for Fire Starters in your holiday decorations by using flameless candles near flammable objects, not burning trees, wreaths, or wrapping paper in fireplaces, use a screen over fireplaces, and clean your chimney and fireplace once a year.
- Food poisoning is no joke. Be sure to wash your hands frequently when handling food, keep raw meat separate from fresh produce, and avoid cross-contamination by using separate preparation materials.
- Give the appropriate gifts to children based on their age because toys are age-rated for safety, not for children’s intellect and physical ability.
Gatherings around this time may look different while we are still under COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. You should take the right precautions to ensure the safety of your family, friends, and community. The CDC recommends many precautions when hosting or visiting.
